Entering Wrigley Field to a sea of fans wearing "Vote for Lee" T-shirts and screaming his name, "American Idol" finalist Lee DeWyze soaked in the atmosphere prior to throwing the ceremonial first pitch at Friday's game.
"I'm down on Wrigley Field right now," DeWyze said. "This is dope."
DeWyze, a Cubs fan, mingled with friends and fans behind home plate for a few minutes, talking about how the experience was surreal. Then DeWyze took the mound and fired a strike to Cubs pitcher James Russell.
If not for his tight schedule for the rest of the day, DeWyze might have preferred to throw the game's actual first pitch to Pittsburgh's Akinori Iwamura.
"I don't want to leave -- this is incredible," he said. "This is awesome. Best experience of my life."
DeWyze will head to suburban Mount Prospect, Ill., later on Friday, where he will perform as one of three finalists on the popular FOX show.
DeWyze, 24, survived the cut on Wednesday, along with Crystal Bowersox and Casey James. The three contestants who remain in the singing competition will be filmed at home, and DeWyze included a stop at the Friendly Confines as part of his homecoming.
The entire day, including the visit for the Cubs' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, will be featured on next week's "American Idol" program.
