On the one-year anniversary of Carlos Zambrano's no-hitter, Ryan Dempster threw about half of one Monday against the Brewers.

Jason Kendall broke up the bid with a bloop single with two outs in the fifth, but Dempster (10-8) went on to finish eight strong frames, leading the Cubs to a 2-0 victory.

Derrek Lee connected on a solo home run, and center fielder Sam Fuld preserved the Cubs' slim lead with a sensational catch.

Behind Dempster's effort, the Cubs improved to 9-4 in September and raised their record to six games over .500 for the first time since Aug. 10. Dempster, who surrendered four hits, walked one and struck out four, joined John Smoltz as the only pitchers to have consecutive 10-win seasons as a starter after three straight 20-save seasons.

The Cubs stranded two runners in the first, and the game remained scoreless until the fourth, when Lee led off with a drive that just cleared the right-field wall. The blast was Lee's 33rd, the second-highest total of his career behind his 2005 season, when he hit 46.

With two outs in the fifth, Kendall singled, stole second and moved to third on Geovany Soto's wild throw. Frank Catalanotto followed with a shallow fly to right-center field, but Fuld added to his collection of highlight-reel grabs when he raced into the gap and made a full-extension diving catch to end the inning.

In the eighth, Dempster gave up a two-out single to Catalanotto and hit pinch-hitter Ryan Braun, but he retired Felipe Lopez to end the frame.

Kosuke Fukudome added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning.
