This was a makeup game the Cubs would've preferred to skip.

Alexei Ramirez hit an RBI single and another run scored on an error by Alfonso Soriano to help Carlos Torres notch his first Major League win and lead the White Sox to a 5-0 Interleague victory Thursday over the Cubs.

Ryan Dempster (8-8) struck out seven in the loss. He had given up 16 earned runs over 13 1/3 innings in his past three starts against the White Sox, but on Thursday, none of the three runs were earned over his seven-plus innings. That wasn't good enough.

Torres (1-0), making his third Major League start, struck out seven over seven innings. Each strikeout prompted a strange reaction, as the Cubs fans booed and White Sox fans cheered. And there seemed to be a lot of White Sox fans in the crowd of 40,741.

Chris Getz singled with two outs in the White Sox second and moved up on an error by Jake Fox, subbing at first for Derrek Lee, whose wife gave birth to the couple's second child, a boy, early Thursday. Getz then scored on Ramirez's single.

Fox doubled to lead off the Cubs' seventh and one out later, tried to score on Jeff Baker's single. But right fielder Dewayne Wise threw him out at home, the throw beating Fox by a few steps.

In the White Sox eighth, Gordon Beckham singled, and A.J. Pierzynski lofted a ball to left. Soriano, bothered by a sore left knee, misplayed the ball and it dropped. A run scored, and Pierzynski was safe at third on the error. Paul Konerko followed with an RBI single to chase Dempster, who took his frustration out by kicking the water fountain in the dugout.

The game puts an end to the Interleague portion of the Cubs' schedule. They finished 2-4 this season against the White Sox, and dropped to 35-37 all-time.

The bigger picture is that the Cubs went 5-5 on their homestand, and are running out of time to secure a postseason berth.

The crosstown rivals were playing a makeup game for the rained-out June 16 contest.
