Cubs trade 2 prospects
By Paul Sullivan, 1:04 p.m.
The Cubs sent left-hander Clay Rapada to Detroit on Thursday to complete the Craig Monroe deal, and also traded Triple-A Iowa outfielder Buck Coats to Cincinnati for a player to be named later. The Tigers were looking for left-handed pitching, and Rapada was not in the Cubs plans for September call-ups.
Coats, an 18th round pick in the 2000 draft had a brief call-up with the Cubs in 2006, hitting .167 in 18 at-bats. The Cubs will receive a minor-league player in return, but not until after the season's end.
General manager Jim Hendry has until midnight Friday to acquire a player that will be eligible for the postseason roster. The Cubs are looking for another bat, but the recent addition of Monroe may be their only move unless something heats up unexpectedly.
