The Miguel Cabrera sweepstakes is heating up, and only two teams appear to be left in the running. The Yankees and Red Sox have resigned Alex Rodriguez and Mike Lowell, respectively, and are currently packaging their trading chips for a chance to acquire left handed pitcher Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have both picked up their efforts in acquiring the 24 year old Cabrera, who is perhaps to most desired commodity left this offseason, via free agency or trade.

According to Ken Rosenthal, The Dodgers have reportedly offered Matt Kemp, Andy LaRoche, and Clayton Kershaw, while the Angels are countering with Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, Chris Bootcheck, and minor leaguer Nick Adenhart.

Upon completion of yesterday’s trade for Jon Garland, it became more apparant than ever the need for the LA Angels to acquire another bat in their lineup. Ervin Santana, untouchable a year ago, is now expendable in their starting rotation. If the Dodgers end up with Cabrera, expect Santana to be traded somewhere for a bat in return. The Angels are trying to keep Brandon Wood on their roster to replace Orlando Cabrera and join Miguel Cabrera and Valdimir Guerrero in a much improved offense.

The Dodgers appear to be preparing themselves for two acquisitions as well, as trading Matt Kemp would facilitate a move of Juan Pierre to left field. That opens a spot for one of the free agent centerfielders, most likely Aaron Rowand. Joe Torre would prefer to work with veteran players, and ownership is showing they are willing to do whatever possible to give him the tools he needs to win.

The Dodgers have also offered Matt Kemp as part of a package to the Orioles for starter Erik Bedard

Mariano Rivera has accepted the Yankees 3 years, $45 million dollar deal, after initially holding out for a deal similiar to the contract signed by Yankee catcher Jorge Posada. This deal makes Mo the highest paid reliver in the game.

The Brewers are very high on Jason Kendall and would like to move Johnny Estrada, who struggled last year. Expect the Rockies and the Mets to be listening …

Houston Astros beat reporter Richard Justice is reporting the Astros will move quickly on Kaz Matsui after losing out on Luis Castillo; he hints Chris Burke and Luke Scott may be packaged for pitching help

The Phillies did indeed make an offer for Mike Lowell at the 11th hour, contradicting everything GM Pat Gillick told reporters leading up to his agreement with Boston.
